Mathematics for knowledge society
This training program combines typical training workshops, individual learning by reading about teaching mathematics and practicing new ideas in one's classroom, collegial work with peers and active reflection of their own professional growth. Actual training that is done in tandem with Professor John Berry consists of several interconnected consecutive workshops. Training methods in these workshops will demonstrate and imitate the intended methods that the trainees are expected to experiment with in their classrooms. Each work shop will be approximately one working week long. During the entire training process, the trainees will have access to online support from the local advisors that will be made available and also to the chief trainers. They are also encouraged to establish professional collaboration networks with other colleagues.
This program intends to improve the trainees' capacities to train other teachers to use alternative methods of teaching that have proved to increase student achievement, deeper conceptual learning and higher-order mathematical thinking. In order to achieve these intentions the training program includes the following main thematic content areas:
- current issues in teaching and learning mathematics; - how students learn and how it affects teaching mathematics; - small group learning theories and methods; - investigations, problem-solving and mathematical modelling; - using information technologies in teaching mathematics; - assessment in mathematics teaching.
This content will be supported by concrete teaching and learning materials, self-made teaching aids and professional and scientific reading materials.
